Mr. & Mrs. Knits have fond memories of a few summer camps. But what keeps coming to Mr. Knits mind when Mrs. Knits mentions it, is the movie Meatballs, and that song "Are You Ready For The Summer?" The late 70s movie is a somewhat irreverent look at summer camps, and the song prominently features a kids' chorus. So we're hoping to get that song in your head too.
But the Summer of 2021 still looks different than years past. Camp may be closed and the kids are bored and restless. Zoom is taking over our lives and Zoom Fatigue is routine.
Need ideas and inspiration to keep the kiddos busy? Or perhaps their parents with cabin fever? Mrs. Knits Yarn Shop has a solution for you. Craft yarns! Not all of them are really yarn but they are fun – sometimes called novelty yarns.
What is Novelty Yarn? Anything textured, fluffy, metallic, or sequined. You may find them more suited to accent a project, or to weave in with a classic wool or cotton yarn.
Take Knitting Fever International's (KFI) Macrame Cotton. Macrame was a popular craft in the 1970's composed of weaving knots together. Common projects are hanging plant holders or jewelry, purses and decorative items. The texture is a bulky cotton rope material, made from 100% recycled cotton. It's so heavy that you could probably knit a usable softball!
We also have a yarn by KFI called Marshmallow. Like the name suggests, the yarn is threaded polyester with puffed marshmallow squares in blue, green, and yellow. On the label is a pattern for a cute novelty scarf.
And then there's KFI's sister line, EuroYarns (EY), that have a more playful quality to them. Probably the most whimsical of them is Silly Stripes. This is a classic case of wacky mixed colors that somehow work on the ball and in your projects.
